Programs & Initiatives

Wattanak Dance Troupe provides ongoing education and training in Cambodian Classical and Folk dance for students at different stages of their artistic development. Rooted in traditional practice and guided by experienced instructors, our training develops technical skill, artistic discipline, musicality, confidence, and a deeper understanding of Cambodian dance and arts. Students learn through consistent studio practice, repertoire study, performance preparation, mentorship, and direct instruction, developing not only as dancers but also as thoughtful practitioners of the traditions they are learning.

Foundational Training
Students beginning their dance journey are introduced to the fundamental movement vocabulary and physical foundations of Cambodian dance, including posture, hand gestures, footwork, body positions, musicality, and basic performance practices. Training emphasizes developing coordination, strength, flexibility, focus, and discipline while becoming familiar with the structure and qualities of Cambodian dance. Students also begin learning the stories, cultural context, and traditions connected to the movements and repertoire they study.

Developing Dancers
As students progress, training becomes more focused on building technical consistency, expanding movement vocabulary, and learning more complex repertoire. Students develop greater control, musicality, expression, and awareness of performance quality while working toward greater independence in their practice. Instruction continues to connect movement with the history, stories, symbolism, and cultural context of each dance, helping students understand not only how a piece is performed, but why it is performed in a particular way.

Advanced & Pre-Professional Training
More experienced dancers engage in intensive study focused on refining technique, artistry, interpretation, musicality, and stage presence. Training requires greater attention to detail, consistency, physical control, and the ability to embody the character and intention of each role. Advanced dancers take on more extensive repertoire and performance responsibilities while receiving mentorship from senior instructors and artists. They may also contribute to the troupe through teaching assistance, rehearsals, community programs, and other leadership opportunities, gaining experience that supports their continued development as artists.

Individual Training
For the most advanced students, Wattanak Dance Troupe offers one-on-one training with instructors and senior dancers for more focused and individualized study. These sessions allow instruction to be tailored to the dancer’s specific needs and goals, whether strengthening technique, refining a particular role or piece of repertoire, developing musicality and expression, or preparing for advanced performances and artistic opportunities. Individual training provides an additional level of mentorship for dancers who are ready to pursue deeper study and greater artistic independence.

Wattanak Dance Troupe brings the artistry, storytelling, and living traditions of Cambodian Classical and Folk dance to audiences through performances and cultural presentations throughout the year. Our repertoire spans sacred classical works, vibrant folk dances, traditional ceremonial pieces, and theatrical productions, offering audiences opportunities to experience the many forms and stories held within Cambodian dance and arts. Performances can be presented as individual dance pieces, curated programs, cultural showcases, or evening-length works, allowing each engagement to be shaped around the needs of the presenter, venue, and audience. Through performances across theaters, festivals, schools, museums, cultural institutions, and community events, Wattanak Dance Troupe shares Cambodian dance with diverse audiences throughout Minnesota and beyond while creating opportunities for cultural exchange and connection across generations.

Performance Offerings

• Individual Dance Pieces — Short performances featuring Cambodian Classical or Folk repertoire, suitable for festivals, cultural celebrations, conferences, community events, and other programs.

• Cultural Showcases — Curated programs featuring multiple dances that introduce audiences to different styles, stories, traditions, and expressions within Cambodian dance.

• Theatrical & Evening-Length Works — Larger-scale productions that bring together dance, storytelling, music, visual elements, and theatrical presentation to explore Cambodian stories and artistic traditions.

• Educational Performances — Performances for schools, universities, museums, and educational settings that may include narration, demonstrations, historical context, or opportunities for audience engagement.

• Festival & Community Performances — Performances created for public festivals, cultural celebrations, community gatherings, and events that bring people together through dance and the arts.

• Museum & Institutional Programs — Performances and presentations developed in connection with exhibitions, cultural programming, and institutional events, providing context and opportunities to engage with Cambodian artistic traditions.

Depending on the setting, performances may include live narration, historical and cultural context, demonstrations, or post-performance conversations, giving audiences a deeper understanding of the movement, music, symbolism, stories, and practices behind each work. Whether presented as a single dance or a full evening of performance, Wattanak Dance Troupe approaches each engagement with care, honoring the traditions from which the work comes while making Cambodian dance and arts accessible to audiences of all backgrounds.

Wattanak Dance Troupe empowers young people to become confident artists, cultural ambassadors, and future leaders within their communities. Through mentorship, performance opportunities, and collaborative learning, youth participants develop discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and a strong sense of cultural identity rooted in Khmer traditions. Beyond dance training, students are encouraged to take active roles in teaching assistance, event coordination, community outreach, and cultural programming, allowing them to build leadership skills both inside and outside the studio. Community engagement is at the heart of our work, and through partnerships with schools, cultural institutions, festivals, and local organizations, youth gain opportunities to share their artistry, connect with diverse audiences, and build meaningful relationships across communities. These experiences strengthen cultural understanding while cultivating belonging, service, and intergenerational connection, helping nurture the next generation of artists and advocates who will carry Cambodian dance and arts forward with knowledge, pride, and purpose.

Lecture-Demonstration & Artist Talk

Wattanak Dance Troupe offers lecture-demonstrations and artist talks that introduce audiences, students, and community members to Cambodian Classical and Folk dance beyond the stage. Led by Wattanak Dance Troupe instructors and dancers, these sessions explore the history, movement vocabulary, music, symbolism, and traditions that shape Cambodian dance, while providing opportunities to learn how these art forms continue to be practiced, shared, and carried forward today. Through demonstration, storytelling, and conversation, participants gain a deeper understanding of the discipline, lineage, and artistic traditions behind the work. Programs can be adapted for schools, universities, cultural institutions, festivals, and community organizations, with topics tailored to different audiences and areas of study, including dance, music, history, Asian studies, anthropology, arts administration, and cultural preservation.

Running time: 15 to 30 minutes for post-show talks; 50 to 60 minutes for stand-alone programs

Dance Master Class

Wattanak Dance Troupe also offers dance master classes that provide participants with a hands-on introduction to Cambodian Classical and Folk dance. Taught by experienced Wattanak Dance Troupe instructors and dancers, classes explore movement technique, gesture, musicality, rhythm, posture, and expression while providing context on the traditions and practices from which the dances originate. Master classes can be adapted for varying levels of experience and offered as stand-alone workshops, school programs, university courses, community events, or as part of a larger performance engagement. By combining physical practice with cultural and historical context, participants gain a deeper appreciation for Cambodian dance and the knowledge, discipline, and artistic traditions carried through each movement.

Wattanak Dance Troupe partners with schools, universities, museums, arts organizations, and other educational and cultural institutions to support learning through Cambodian dance and arts. These partnerships create opportunities for institutions to incorporate Cambodian Classical and Folk dance into their existing educational, artistic, and cultural programming while providing students, educators, and communities with meaningful opportunities to engage with Cambodian artistic traditions.

Wattanak Dance Troupe values partnerships that create meaningful and lasting connections between Cambodian dance and the communities we serve. By working directly with educational and cultural institutions, we help expand access to Cambodian arts while supporting greater understanding, representation, and inclusion within Minnesota’s educational and artistic landscape.

Wattanak Dance Troupe welcomes master teachers, guest artists, cultural practitioners, and experienced dancers to work with our students and artistic community through guest instruction, master classes, intensive workshops, and residency opportunities. These engagements provide opportunities for visiting artists to share specialized knowledge, techniques, repertoire, and artistic practices while offering Wattanak dancers the chance to learn directly from a wide range of artists and teachers. Visiting artists may be invited to teach Cambodian Classical or Folk dance, music, movement, cultural practices, or other areas of artistic study that complement and expand our dancers’ training.

Residencies and guest teaching engagements can range from a single class or workshop to multi-day intensives and longer-term collaborations, depending on the artist and the needs of the program. We value opportunities that allow for meaningful exchange between visiting artists, Wattanak instructors, and dancers, creating space to share knowledge, ask questions, explore different approaches to artistic practice, and build lasting relationships. Through these collaborations, Wattanak Dance Troupe continues to broaden the learning experiences available to our dancers while creating opportunities for artists to connect with and contribute to the Cambodian dance community in Minnesota.

Wattanak Dance Troupe is dedicated to the preservation, study, and continued practice of traditional Cambodian dance costume as an essential part of Cambodian artistic heritage. Our work recognizes that costume is more than what is worn on stage; each garment, pattern, color, and adornment carries its own history, symbolism, and significance. Dancers are taught the proper ways to wear, arrange, and care for traditional costumes and adornments, as well as the meaning and cultural context behind them. This includes developing an understanding of the sacredness and respect associated with particular garments, patterns, and elements of dress within Cambodian Classical and Folk dance traditions. Through continued practice, instruction, research, and careful care of costumes, Wattanak Dance Troupe helps preserve both the physical garments and the knowledge, customs, and practices that accompany them, ensuring that these traditions remain respected, understood, and carried forward through each generation of dancers.
